The Italian Language and Culture Centre “TORRE DI BABELE” has been in operation since 1984, offering Italian language courses for foreign students, and training and refresher courses for teachers of Italian as a second language.

Torre di Babele is located in the elegant, central Art Nouveau neighborhood of Rome, near La Sapienza University, the historical Villa Torlonia park and the main railway station, Termini. This is an area of tree-lined streets and parks (Villa Torlonia, Villa Massimo, Villa Ada, Villa Borghese) and is only a few minutes walk from the popular student quarter San Lorenzo, with its pubs, cafes, restaurants, pizzerias and lively nightlife.
The school occupies two floors of a gracious Art Nouveau villa. The fully air-conditioned building is surrounded by a spacious garden where classes may be held outdoors and students can spend their breaks and free time. Thanks to the excellent public transit system serving the area, the city’s major historical sites and commercial areas can be quickly reached. The school is easily accessible from any part of town and is only two metro stops from the main railway station, Termini, and from Tiburtina station (both stations have direct service to Fiumicino International Airport). This very centrally-located yet tranquil area offers an ideal environment in which to study and enjoy the city of Rome off the usual tourist route.
At Torre di Babele students find a wide range of courses and a highly qualified teaching staff combined with a welcoming atmosphere and personalized attention. Our staff helps students feel at home right from the start, offering them all the help they need to make their stay in Rome pleasant, comfortable and interesting.

PREPARATORY COURSE FOR C.I.L.S. EXAM (Certificate of Italian as a Foreign Language)
All our group intensive courses offer a preparation for the C.I.L.S. Exam. However, for a more specific preparation, we suggest the courses taught by our instructors specialized in this area. This course includes 20 hours of individual lessons. The Superintensive “A” and “B” courses also provide an effective preparation for this exam.

This course is designed for people staying in Rome for longer periods of time, and consists of two-hour lessons held twice a week. The non-intensive courses are available from October to June.

Years of experience in the field have enabled the school to offer individual courses which cater perfectly to personal and professional needs at all linguistic levels. Made-to-measure programmes are constructed around students’ specified requirements and are based on their own pace and learning styles.

Vacation/study for participants age 50 and over. This course is conducted in small, same-level groups in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere. A rich cultural programme accompanies the course.

The Senior Class programme includes the following cultural activities:

4 afternoon guided tours in or near Rome

 The Roman Forum and the Imperial Forums (Curia, Temple of Vesta, Trajan’s Market)
 Pigna district (Pantheon, S. Maria Sopra Minerva Church, sacred archeological area at Largo Argentina)
 Monti district and the Esquiline basilicas (S. Maria Maggiore, Santa Prudenziana, Santa Prassede)

 Ostia Antica

2 evening activities

 Guided tour of the center followed by dinner in a typical Roman restaurant

 A cooking workshop in which students prepare a full dinner menu and enjoy the meal together

1 full-day weekend trip to Orvieto, a small town in Umbria about an hour from Rome. Orvieto is known throughout Italy not only for its Etruscan origins, its Cathedral with frescoes by Signorelli and its historic center and medieval walls, but also for its food and white wine.

The school organizes seminars led by experts active in various fields of culture. These seminars are directed towards those who have at least an intermediate knowledge of the language. The minimum number of participants in each group is five, and students interested in taking part in a particular seminar may reserve a place at the beginning of the course. The cost of the seminar is additional.

For those who love Italian food, we offer two types of cooking courses:

A) Professional courses at a culinary school recognized by the Lazio
Chefs’ Association. Three month courses begin in January, April and September.

B) Non-professional courses. Theoretical-practical courses ranging from a few lessons to one or more weeks are offered at the home of the teacher. These courses are held year round, except in the month of August, and must be booked in advance.
Activities and affiliations:

- Production of school's own textbooks, audio tapes and supplementary teaching materials.

- Training and refresher courses for teachers of Italian as a foreign language, offered as part of the LINGUA programme of the European Community.

- Specially designed group programmes for Austrian, German, American, Brazilian, Serbian and Turkish high school and university students, and corporate and embassy personnel.

- Organization of language courses and job referrals for young people as part of the PETRA II and LINGUA IV programmes of the European Community.

Before the beginning of their first course, students are given an oral and written test to determine their knowledge of the language and thus ensure that they are placed in the appropriate level. Students must pass a test at the end of each level in order to move up to the next.

At the end of the course, the school will issue a certificate of attendance indicating the level of course completed.

Students who have completed our levels 4 and 7 will have the opportunity to take a written and oral exam to obtain the Torre di Babele Italian Language Diploma. Students may register for the Diploma exam at an extra charge of 20 Euros.

Torre di Babele operates as an authorized centre for preparation courses and registration for the C.I.L.S. (Certificato di Italiano come Lingua Straniera / Certificate in Italian as a Foreign Language) examinations of the Siena University for foreign students. The exams are given twice a year, in December and June. The C.I.L.S. is recognized by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
