Pietraperzia is placed in the middle of Sicily, in the province of Enna. The old small town still maintains its original medieval plant and owes its name to the nearby rock with holes petra pirciata which was an ancient site of burial chambers tracing back to the prehistoric era. The charming town panorama is highlighted by the prevailing ochre-colour of the houses, due to the tonality of the stones used to build the buildings. Walking down the streets of the town-centre one may re-live the same atmosphere of a long time ago Sicily which has been so well described in the novels of the famous writers Verga and Pirandello. Worth visiting are: the library which houses very ancient texts, the main Church guarding some interesting works by the sculptors Paladino and Gagini. Not so far away… the town of Piazza Armerina: it would deserve a separated description because of its archaeological excavations which have brought to light a Roman age villa - called Villa del Casale - where mosaics of indescribable beauty have been found and which have been proclaimed a Unesco world heritage site.
