ARTeUTILeVENT | collective art exhibition | |||||||||
In September 2004 six Australian artists - four from Brisbane, one from Melbourne and one from Yorkshire (UK) - travelled to Sicily on a four - week painting expedition. It was the first visit to Sicily for the artists and they found Trapani to be a wonderfully inspiring place to work. The ancient churches, shops and houses in dusty pinks and ochres, against the strong blues and turquoise of the ocean and the rugged rocky coast created an artists paradise. The light in Sicily has an empheral feeling that is very different to Australia in the southern hemisphere. We visited the medieval town of Erice - 'the magic mountain' with its ancient buildings, beautifully designed narrow cobblestone streets and its mystic ambience. From there we experienced a grand view of Trapani, the Egadi Islands and the sea. Sunset was especially spectacular from this lofty viewpoint. The small beautiful islands of Levanzo and Mozia gave us more information with which to create, and the wild beauty of Scopello was breathtaking with its dramatic rock formations jutting up from the ocean bed. The exhibition "THE MAGIC OF TRAPANI" opened in the ARTeUtile apartments at Via Nunzio Nasi, Trapani on the 30/09/04. Visitors enjoyed viewing the sixty or so works on canvas and on paper that had been produced by the group in a short period of time. The incredible hospitality of the Trapani people of made us feel very much at home and we agreed that it was a wonderful creative experience that will remain forever a special memory for us all.
