SJW School is located in the St John's Wood area of central London, in Travel Zone two. It is a pleasant, residential part of the city and there are numerous pubs, cafes and restaurants nearby. The world famous Saatchi Modern Art Gallery is behind SJW, and the EMI Studio, where The Beatles recorded their albums, is five minutes away in Abbey Road.

About the school

The school was founded in 1952, and is accredited by the British Council. There are no "extras" to pay at SJW - we don't charge "enrolment fees" or "registration fees", and every student receives a free notebook and pen. All students receive the SJW Certificate of Study at the end of the course.

There are four courses at SJW:

1. Main Course - maximum 8 students per class.

2. Cambridge University Examination courses: FCE and CAE - maximum 8 students per class.

3. Main + IELTS course - maximum 8 students per class.

4. Summer Course - maximum 10 students per class.

1. Main Course

is 25 lessons per week, Monday to Friday, 0900 to 1420.

This is our most popular course option. It is an Intensive General English skills course, offering speaking, listening, reading and writing practice. There are classes at Elementary, Lower Intermediate, Intermediate, Upper Intermediate and Advanced levels. There are no classes for beginners. New students are tested on the first day of their course.

The maximum number of students in each class is 8. The minimum age of students is 18.


2. Cambridge University Examination Courses in 2007

offer 25 lessons per week, Monday to Friday, 0900 to 1420.

There are two levels - FIRST CERTIFICATE ('FCE' - Upper Intermediate level), and ADVANCED CERTIFICATE ('CAE' - Advanced level). The Cambridge University FCE or CAE Exam Entry
The maximum number of students in each Exam class is 8. The minimum age is 18.

Students who want to join an exam class will be sent an Assessment Test before enrolling. They will also be tested on the first day of their course.

SJW offers a Cambridge University Exam Pass Guarantee - students who are tested by us and placed in the appropriate exam class, attend all lessons for 14 weeks, work diligently, but fail the exam, will be given tuition credit to enable them to repeat the entire course at no cost. Full details of the guarantee will be mailed with the Assessment Test.

Spring Term Exam course dates: Courses start on 5 March. Courses end on 8 June. Exams: FCE 12 June, CAE 13 June.

Autumn Term Exam course dates: Courses start: 3 September. Courses end: 7 December. Exams: FCE 11 December, CAE 12 December.

Late entry to the Spring and Autumn term Cambridge Exam courses is permitted, but without the Pass Guarantee.

3. Main + IELTS

Test courses in 2007 offer 30 lessons per week, Monday to Friday, 0900 to 1520. The courses include 25 lessons of Maincourse at the appropriate level (Upper Intermediate or Advanced) and 5 lessons per week of intensive IELTS test training.These courses are ideal for students who plan to study at degree level in a UK University, or who need to obtain a specific IELTS score for career or educational reasons. IELTS training is therefore only suitable for students who are at Upper Intermediate or Advanced level.

The maximum number of students per class on our Main + IELTS courses is 8. The minimum age is 18.

Main + IELTS Course Dates in 2007:

8 January to 2 February (4 weeks)
5 February to 2 March (4 weeks)
2 to 27 April (4 weeks)
30 April to 25 May (4 weeks)
1 to 26 October (4 weeks)
29 October to 23 November (4 weeks)
26 November to 21 December (4 weeks)

4. Summer Course

offers 25 lessons per week of Intensive General English Language practice, including speaking, listening, reading and writing. Classes are Monday to Friday, 0900 to 1420. Classes are offered at Elementary, Lower Intermediate, Intermediate, Upper Intermediate and Advanced levels. There are no classes for beginners. New students are tested on the first day of their course.

The maximum number of students per class is 10, and the minimum age is 18.

Summercourse Entry Dates in 2007 are:

June 11, 18, 25.
July 2, 9, 16, 23, 30.
August 6, 13, 20, 27.

SJW Students are mainly professional people: office workers, teachers, managers, University students, doctors & nurses, hotel & tourism staff, and government employees. The average age is around 25, but we often have students who are in their forties, fifties or even older. The minimum age is 18. Most students come from Europe - about 10 percent come from Switzerland, Italy, Japan and France. About 5 percent of students come from Brasil, Argentina, Spain, Hungary and Korea.

Homestay Accommodation can be arranged for our students:

A single room with a local host family, taking breakfast and dinner every day

A single room, with breakfast only

For couples, a shared room with breakfast and dinner or a shared room, with breakfast only.

Most host families are in Travel Zones 2 or 3, and the total journey time to school varies from about 2 minutes to about 40 minutes. SJW is located in Travel Zone 2. The check-in day for homestay is the Sunday before the start of the course. Check-out day is the Saturday after it finishes.

Local Apartments can be rented for short periods.

Student Residence accommodation (including breakfast) is also available in central London.

The SJW Social Programme offers a wide variety of optional activities for adults: theatre & cinema visits, pub crawls, greyhound racing, discotheques, football games, museum & gallery visits, TV shows, restaurant evenings, sightseeing, and Saturday excurions to towns outside London. There are normally four events each week. Those held inside the school are free, and visits to the theatre, cinema etc cost 5 to 10 British pounds. Saturday excursions cost about 25 British pounds.

Travel Insurance to cover the student during the period of the course is important. It should be obtained before travelling to the UK.

Payment for SJW courses can be made by credit card, bank transfer or UK cheque.

Students who need a Letter of Acceptance in order to obtain a Student Visa must pay their course fees first.
