From the sea to the market: the fishing life of Catania This selection of images is part of a photographic project on the theme of fishing and the fish market of Catania - Sicily. Gathering the images for this project involved participation in every aspect of this activity. The first stage of the research involved documenting the various phases of fishing - working through the night, up to the return of the boats to the harbour at the first light of dawn, and then following the transfer of the catch to the bustling wholesale market. The second part of the project took place at Catania's fish market, which sits under the city's historic 16th century arches. Through these pictures, the photographer tried to capture a very particular aspect of Sicilian life: the market. A lively, engaging place, where people gather and one feels an atmosphere, something that cannot quite be captured, but is still full of indescribable charm. This world of fishing and fish markets is still very much alive today, although it faces the inevitable changes of a society leaning towards the future. Hence, the photographer felt the need to document this fascinating world, a choice made without any hesitation. |
