York is a university city and a popular tourist destination - the city has everything from a lively nightlife to historic Roman walls and Viking remains. Thousands of years of heritage mingle with the fast pace of city living creating a vibrant atmosphere.

There are a wide variety of places to eat and drink to suit all budgets and there is a lively, party atmosphere in the evenings in a city that is used to entertaining. The people of York welcome visitors and sight seeing is a great way to practise your improving English skills.

About the school:

English in York is located right in the heart of the city, within walking distance of many of the attractions and a huge range of shops.

We have students from all over the world with many different requirements, so our courses are extremely flexible.

Choose the course that you think will help most with your future plans and then decide when you want to start and how long you want to stay for. The group sizes are small and you will be taught with people of similar ability to yourself.

English in York is so successful because our students enjoy the courses - there is plenty of interaction and variety - we make learning fun!

A part time general English course of 15 hours of organised study per week in mixed nationality groups.

Key points:

All four language skills are covered – speaking, listening, reading and writing.

A detailed look at language structure.

Grammar points are presented.

Booked based classes, often using the English File or Framework series. Supplementary materials created by the teacher are also used.

Regular homework.

Focus on developing language accuracy.

Maximum group size is 12 students. Average group size outside July and
August is 6 – 8 people.

Lessons from 09.00 until 12.20 Monday to Friday.

Begin this course on any Monday of the year and stay for any number of weeks.

A full time general English course of 26 hours of organised study per week in mixed nationality groups.

Key points:

All four language skills are covered – speaking, listening, reading and writing.

A detailed look at language structure in the morning classes with grammar points presented.

Booked based morning classes, often using the English File or Framework series. Supplementary materials created by the teacher are also used. Regular homework is set.

Communication based afternoon classes, focussing on listening and speaking skills.

Afternoon lessons are theme driven, with a topic chosen by the teacher each week. Students are given the opportunity to talk about current issues and discuss topics such as education, fashion, sports, crime, transport, etc.

Focus on developing language accuracy in the morning classes and increasing fluency in the afternoon sessions.

Key facts:

Maximum group size is 12 students. Average group size outside July and
August is 6 – 8 people.

All language levels from elementary to advanced. No complete beginners are accepted.

Lessons from 09.00 until 12.20, and 14.00 to 16.30, Monday to Friday.

Begin this course on any Monday of the year and stay for any number of weeks.

Business English Group

An intensive course specifically designed for business people, covering business language commonly used in presentations, meetings, on the telephone and in social situations.

This is an intermediate level course. This is a full day course of one or two weeks.

Combi-Group

A combination of group work with individual sessions. We agree course objectives with you for the one-to-one elements and these form the basis of your programme along with any job-specific material you can bring with you.

A full day course over a minimum of one week. You can start this course any Monday of the year.

Combi-Solo

Taught on a one-to-one basis with an emphasis on achieving objectives that we will set with you prior to starting the course.

A full day course over a minimum of one week. You can start this course any Monday of the year.

Closed Group

Highly specialised courses developed and delivered in response to client requests, teaching English to meet the language needs of specific groups such as technical personnel, teachers and journalists
